How to play
- Read the abacus. The beads show a number. Type what you see. Remember: a bead counts only when it touches the beam.
- Set the number. A number appears. Tap the beads until the abacus shows it, then press Check.
- Quick sum. Work it out on the abacus or in your head, type the answer and press Check.
You get one try per question. A wrong answer shows the right one with a short reason, so you can see where it slipped. Your best score for each level is kept in this browser only.
Which level should I pick?
| Level | Numbers on the abacus | Sums | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 1 to 2 digits | Single digits, + and − | Abacus Levels 0 to 2 |
| Medium | 3 digits | Two digits, + and −, and three-row sums | Levels 2 to 4 |
| Hard | 4 digits | × by one digit and exact ÷ | Levels 5 and above |
Tips for a better score
- Read rods from the left, one at a time. Say the digit before moving on.
- Clear your thinking between questions the way you'd clear the beads.
- Aim for 8 out of 10 before moving up a level. Speed comes later.
- Parents: play a round yourself first, then take turns with your child.
For untimed practice, use the practice tools or print a worksheet. To understand the rules behind the sums, read small friends and big friends.
