Basics

What is an abacus?

An abacus is a frame with beads on rods, used for arithmetic. Each rod stands for one place value, such as ones, tens or hundreds.

What is a soroban?

A soroban is the Japanese abacus. Each rod has one bead worth 5 above the beam and four beads worth 1 below. It's the type most classes in India use.

Who invented the abacus?

No single person. Counting boards were used in Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome, and bead frames developed in China and Japan over many centuries.

How many rods should an abacus have?

For classes, at least 13 rods. Larger sorobans have 15, 17 or 23 rods.

What is anzan or mental abacus?

Anzan is calculating in your head by picturing an abacus and moving imaginary beads. It's the goal of the later levels.

How it works

What are small friends in abacus?

Pairs of numbers that make 5: 1 and 4, 2 and 3. You use them when a rod doesn't have enough free earth beads.

What are big friends in abacus?

Pairs that make 10, such as 3 and 7. You use them to carry to or borrow from the next rod.

Why does abacus work from left to right?

Working from the largest place first matches how numbers are read and makes mental calculation easier later.

Can you multiply and divide on an abacus?

Yes. Multiplication uses times tables and adding partial products onto the right rods. Division works like long division.

Can an abacus handle decimals?

Yes. You choose a unit rod and treat the rods to its right as tenths, hundredths and so on.

Children and age

What is the right age to start abacus?

Most children start between 5 and 7. Readiness matters more: counting to 20, recognising numbers and sitting for 15–20 minutes.

Is it too late to start at 10 or 12?

No. Older children often move through the early levels faster. Some prefer Vedic Maths at that age.

How long does it take to learn abacus?

A full programme usually takes 2 to 4 years across 8 to 10 levels.

How much practice is needed each day?

About 10 to 15 minutes a day is typical. Short daily sessions tend to work better than long weekly ones.

Will abacus confuse my child with school methods?

Some children mix up the two for a few weeks, mainly because abacus goes left to right. Most settle quickly.

What if my child doesn't enjoy abacus?

Make sessions shorter and add games, or talk to the teacher if your child goes to a class. If the dislike lasts for weeks, a break is reasonable.

Benefits and evidence

What are the main benefits of abacus?

Regular practice may support a better understanding of place value, faster and more accurate arithmetic and, later, mental calculation. Better focus and memory are often reported but less proven.

Does abacus increase IQ?

There's no good evidence that it does. The main trial in Vadodara found no change in basic cognitive abilities.

Will abacus improve school maths marks?

It may help with arithmetic questions. School maths also includes geometry, data and word problems, which abacus doesn't cover.

Is there research on abacus learning?

Yes. A randomised trial in Vadodara found arithmetic gains after about three years. A one-year US school trial found no clear advantage.

Does abacus develop the right brain?

The idea of separate left-brain and right-brain learning isn't supported by neuroscience.

Comparisons and costs

Which is better, abacus or Vedic Maths?

Neither is better for everyone. Abacus suits younger children and builds from a physical tool. Vedic Maths is a set of shortcuts that suits children about 10 and older.

Why learn abacus when calculators exist?

A calculator gives answers but builds no calculation skill. Abacus builds number sense that helps with estimation and checking.

How much do abacus classes cost in India?

Many city centres charge about ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 a month, plus kit and exam fees. Costs vary by city and brand.

Can my child learn abacus at home or online?

Yes. The early levels are easy to start at home with a physical abacus, worksheets and free tools like the ones on this site. Paid classes, online or in person, are an option rather than a requirement.

Can a parent teach abacus at home?

Yes, for the early levels. Learn the bead values and friend rules a little ahead of your child, then practise together with worksheets and short games.

Which abacus should I buy?

A soroban with 13 or more rods, unit dots and smooth beads. ₹150 to ₹500 is enough.
